Getting lined up between your RV and towed vehicle isn’t always perfect. The Alpha 2 tow bar takes the hassle out of setup with telescoping arms that extend from 39" to 48-3/4" and automatically lock when you pull forward. A swivel head joint lets the bar twist side-to-side so you can connect even if things aren’t perfectly straight. When it’s time to unhook, non-binding release levers pop the tension free with a press, so disconnecting on uneven ground is quick and frustration-free.
Made from heavy-duty steel and powder-coated to resist corrosion, this tow bar is built for years of use. The triple-lug brackets give a tight, secure link to the base plate, while rubber sleeves keep dirt and debris away from the inner arms. Every latch, pin, and joint is designed to hold up over thousands of miles of towing, giving you confidence to take on cross-country trips without worry.
The Alpha 2 comes ready with coiled safety cables rated to match the bar’s 8,500 lb limit. Their vinyl coating protects against rust and weather, and the spring-loaded S-hooks stay latched no matter how rough the ride gets. The cables coil tightly so they don’t drag, and when you’re done towing, the bar folds neatly on the back of your RV—arms can swing left or right to stow out of the way.
This RV-mounted tow bar works with 2" x 2" hitch receivers and fits Blue Ox base plates spaced up to 32" apart. With the proper adapter (sold separately), it also connects to base plates from other popular brands. That flexibility makes it a solid choice if you run more than one setup or upgrade parts down the road.
Spring-loaded latches, protective sleeves, and sealed joints help keep dirt out and motion smooth. At 40 lbs, it’s easy to handle but solid enough to inspire confidence every time you hook up. When stored, adding a protective cover (BX8875 – sold separately) keeps it looking sharp trip after trip.
Flat towing can be a much more convenient way to take your car RVing with you than using a trailer or a tow dolly. It'll save you storage space both at home and at the campsite, and it takes less time and hassle to hook up.
To flat tow your vehicle, there are 5 basic components you're going to need: a tow bar, a base plate kit, a safety cable set, tow bar wiring, and a flat tow braking system.

The custom-fit base plate installs on the frame of your toad so you can connect the car to your RV with a tow bar. Hook up safety cables between the vehicles to ensure that the toad does not separate from the motorhome if the tow bar becomes detached. Tow bar wiring syncs your vehicle's signal lights with your motorhome's tail lights, as required by law in most states. Finally, the flat tow braking system - also required in most states - activates the brakes in the toad when you hit the brakes in the RV, making for smoother, safer braking, and preventing wear on your motorhome.

After one year and several trips, there seems to be some play and wear in the swivel pins. Not sure if this is normal or if pins need to be replaced already. Will be investigating further before another long drive.

I did hear back from my contact at Blue Ox. They advised that everything looked normal and the only suggestion was that you could use washer kit part # BLU65CR to tune up the tow bar.

Looks like a quality tow bar. However, I'm pretty disappointed because the ratings on it were very favorable. I just used it for the first time and it's EXTREMELY tight and difficult to get into or out of the storage position. I'm going to contact etrailer to see if there's something I can do or if it will loosen up over time. I don't want to start loosening bolts. If it stays this tight, my rating would go down to a 1.

I reached out to Blue Ox and they did advise that a new tow bar can sometimes be difficult to place into the stow position. It has been recommended to having the legs spread shoulder width apart prior to moving it up, then pressing one leg down at a time to ensure that upright pin stays in the channel. I am attaching a video in an email to you that they sent to demonstrate it.

Weve used a Blue Ox Alpha 2 towbar about 8 times and its gotten more and more difficult to get intoout of the storage position. I would not recommend this towbar. When I contacted Blue Ox and etrailer in February 2024, they said it would loosen up and told me NOT to loosen the pivot bolt to make the process easier. I contacted Blue Ox mid summer because I was having even more difficulty and Karley Paeper their rep told me to loosen the pivot bolt. I disassembled the hitch and unfortunately theres a nylock nut about 10 down inside the tube that spins when you turn the bolt. When I told Karley I didnt have the proper tools to loosen the bolt, she told me Id have to figure out how to keep that nut from spinning. She then told me warranty doesnt cover that workmanship?? and it would cost me $209.00 to get it fixed but theyd cover shipping. Seriously? I can buy the tools to fix it myself for less than that. Now Im upset with myself for buying all Blue Ox parts. Didnt know their warranty meant you fix their equipment for them. I purchased all parts for my toad from etrailer. Hitch, Towbar, wiring for my jeep, Airforce One braking, etc. I’m happy with everything else. Just very disappointed in BlueOx customer service and think others need to beware of this issue before purchasing. I ended up welding a piece of square tubing onto the right side of the hitch to give me leverage to get the towbar into and out of the storage position. Towbar works fine other than this issue. I would NOT recommend this towbar.

This is a really solid base plate. Installation for the Pontiac Vibe was is definitely more involved that installing the alternative (Road Master). The Road Master base plate just bolts through existing bumper holes and an engine mount. This base plate is bolted directly to the frame just behind the bumper, with four 3/8" grade 5 bolts in holes you have to drill after clamping the base plate in place. I found it easy to get the required height (3/4" below bumper) but simply using a 1x3 piece of lumber. You also have drill a 1.25"hole in the frame to gain access to the inside of the frame. Tricky part of this install is getting the nuts, which are welded to a 1" plate and a ~14" steel rods, into place to be line up with the holes. It is a little hard to see. I also recommend making sure the bolts actually thread easily on to the nuts before putting the nuts in the the frame. I had the misfortune of one of the either cross threading or jamming, and I ended up having to cut the bolt head off with a sawsall using a metal blade. The bolt had not gone very far into the nut before it jammed so I was just able to get the sawsall blade behind the head, and cut it off, holding the head with a pair of vice grips. If that hadn't worked I would have had to take the car to a shop with oxy-acetaline torch to have it cut off. I was able to fish the cut of bolt out for the frame with a bent coat hanger. The first photo is of the base plate after I cut off the bolt.
Blue Ox support was GREAT! I sent them and email explaining that I needed new nuts and bolts, and they sent the needed parts (at no charge!). I just had to put my install on hold for several days.
The second problem I had was in attaching the electrical harness recepticle to the tubes on the to bar. One of the self tapping screws twisted off as I was tighting it. I ended up cutting of 1/2" of the tubes (with the sawsall) and then tapping the tubes with 1/4x20 threads, and regaining the length cut off with the bolt. My recommendation to blue ox, is that they tap these tubes with to 1/4x20, and provide regular bolts to attach the recepticle. The second picture showes the result.
When I showed the 3rd and 4th pictures to my mechanic, he was impressed and said, "That looks really solid!" The last picture shows the front of the car after I have started to assemble it (with the styrofoam padding on the bumper, and the draw bars in place.
The solidity of the Blue Ox engineering and the FABULOUS customer support has totally turned my into a Blue Ox fan. I'm glad my RV dealer suggested that I go with Blue Ox instead of the slightly cheaper solution, that would have been much less solid.

It can be difficult to get both bars to lock in place for towing.
Best choice for a tow bar. Safe, reliable, easy to use. If you're thinking about touring in a motorhome without a tow vehicle you might want to think again. We believe the Blue Ox is the best investment we've made in our RV setup. Can't imagine not having our CR-v with us. The Blue Ox makes it super easy to connect and disconnect the towed vehicle. I also like that it doesn't alter the appearance of the tow vehicle when disconnected.
This is our second blue ox towbar as the first one got bent somehow and wouldn't fold up anymore. The towbar works great - but the customer service from etrailer is outstanding. I can't say enough good things about this company and how concerned they are that you get the right product and that you get it on time. Customer service like this is hard to come by these days!
Haven't had the chance to use it yet, but trial fit is great think it will work great. Customer service and shipping with you guys is always top notch!!!
This is very good quality equipment, wasn't very difficult to install, a lot of video's pertaining to the install and use of product, either on the Etrailer site or YouTubbe.

Some play will be normal in the tow bar however you will want to make sure that the holes have not become elongated. If you would like to send pictures of it, then I can have Blue Ox take a look for you.
